Solar energy is the most abundant of all energy resources and can even be productive in cloudy weather. The rate at which solar energy is intercepted by the Earth is about 10,000 times greater than the rate at which human consumes energy.

Solar technologies can deliver heat, cooling, natural lighting, electricity, and fuels for a host of applications. Solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical energy either through photovoltaic panels or through mirrors that concentrate solar radiation on the plate.

The cost of manufacturing solar panels has plummeted dramatically in the last decade, making them not only affordable but often the cheapest form of electricity. Solar panels have a lifespan of roughly 30 years, and come in variety of shades depending on the type of material used in manufacturing, this cost will cover in longer life span of the solar panels. Solar power is harnessing the energy of sun.

Working Principles

Solar power is a renewable energy source that harnesses the energy of the sun to generate electricity. When the sun shines onto a solar panel, energy from the sunlight is absorbed by the PV cells in the panel. This energy creates electrical charges that move in response to an internal electrical field in the cell, causing electricity to flow. This is called as renewable energy.

This process primarily involves:

Photovoltaic (PV) Cells

Solar panels, composed of PV cells, are the core of solar power systems. These cells contain semiconductors (usually silicon) that absorb photons (sunlight) when struck to the solar panel.

Electron Excitation

When sunlight hits the PV cells, it excites electrons within the semiconductor material, causing them to become energized. In a material electron of an element create energy by Excitation.

Electric Current Generation

The energized electrons flow through an electrical circuit, creating an electric current by energy of an excited electron. This direct current (DC) is then converted into alternating current (AC) by an inverter, making it compatible with the electrical grid and most appliances.

Concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) technology

CSP technologies use mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto a receiver. The energy from the concentrated sunlight heats a high temperature fluid in the receiver.

This heat – also known as thermal energy – can be used to spin a turbine or power an engine to generate electricity. It can also be used in a variety of industrial applications, like water desalination, enhanced oil recovery, food processing, chemical production, and mineral processing.

Advantages:

Clean and Renewable

Solar power is a clean energy source that produces no greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the carbon footprint and combatting climate change. No running cost but first cost only.

Abundant Resource

Sunlight is abundant and available in most parts of the world, making solar power accessible to a wide range of locations and every where on the planet.

Solar panels can significantly lower electricity bills for homeowners and businesses by generating their own electricity by renewable energy sources.

Once installed, solar panels have low operating and maintenance costs, requiring minimal upkeep.

Grid Independence

Solar power can be used to generate electricity off-grid, providing power in remote areas or during grid outages.

Long Lifespan

 Solar panels have a long lifespan (typically 25-30 years or more) and often come with warranties. This is  an enough time to recover first high cost.

Disadvantages:

High Initial Costs

The upfront cost of purchasing and installing solar panels can be relatively high, although it has decreased over the years. High cost first investment render to use it.

Intermittency

Solar power generation depends on sunlight, making it intermittent. It's less effective during cloudy days and not available at night.

Energy Storage Challenges

To use solar power during the night or on cloudy days, energy storage solutions (batteries) are needed, adding to the overall system cost. Power storage is difficult for all renewable energy sources heavy batteries storage is required to use power in case of unavailable for usage.

Solar panels require significant space for installation, which might be a limitation in densely populated areas or for small properties.

The manufacturing and disposal of solar panels involve certain environmental impacts, such as the use of rare materials and potential waste management issues.

Solar power is a promising and environmentally friendly energy source that is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. While it offers numerous advantages, including sustainability and reduced energy bills, it also faces challenges like intermittent generation and initial costs. However, ongoing advancements in technology and decreasing costs are making solar power an attractive option for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. Government should reduce tax and custom duty charges on renewable energy sources such as solar panels, wind powers and turbines for the clean and sustainable environment.
